Sony sells Vaio PC brand


The Japanese technology giant Sony has decided to sell its PC business and found with the investment fund Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) is already a buyer. The Vaio brand is to remain valid and the customer service are maintained. However, there will be in the future only notebooks and PCs from Sony only in Japan. Worldwide sales and manufacture of products Vaio is set. The decision means a layoff of 5,000 employees. The focus of the brand Vaio will in future only be the sale of PCs for the Japanese market.

In the current year, the company expects an amount ranging from 800 million euro loss. Its PC business launched the Walkman manufacturer in 1996 and recorded only one paragraph of 5.8 million units while weddings were still 9 million.The market share amounts to market research firm Gartner, the to just 1.9 percent, Sony ended up in ninth place among PC manufacturers.

The TV business is also going badly for years and so far recorded a total loss of the equivalent of 5.5 billion euros. A spin-off of TV wedding is to take place later this year. In the fourth quarter, however, Sony could reach its operating profit to EUR 660 million due to strong demand for the Playstation 4. The focus points will be in the future for game consoles, smartphones, tablets and games.
